Resolution: Support a Mutual Ceasefire in Ukraine
WHEREAS, President Biden has expressed urgent and grave concerns about the continued war in Ukraine, noting we have not been closer to nuclear Armageddon since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis because Russian President Vladamir Putin’s veiled threats to launch tactical or short range nuclear weapons would surely lead to a devastating nuclear war …
WHEREAS, a protracted war in Ukraine raises the specter of global famine because blockades and mining of explosives in the Black Sea could disrupt the export of wheat and barley from Ukraine and Russia, the breadbasket of the world that produces a third of the world’s grain exports on which much of the Middle East and Africa rely …
WHEREAS, the United States, which has allocated over $50 billion in humanitarian aid, weapons and military training for Ukraine, can play a critical role in bringing the war to a close to prevent further death, destruction and retaliation in Ukraine …
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the California Democratic Party calls on the Biden administration and Congress to support a mutual ceasefire in Ukraine, as well as negotiations to reach a lasting peace in the region.
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, copies of this resolution will be sent to all Democrats in Congress, as well as President Biden, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
